Local veteran and wife receive new home comfort system after nomination to program that gives back to homeowners

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- A local couple is receiving a free home comfort system through a program that celebrates community members who give back to their neighborhoods.

Richard and Margie Carrillo are receiving the new system after being selected by WireNut Home Services through the Lennox Feel the Love program. They were nominated by their daughter, Denise Carrillo, who organizers say shared her family's story of generosity and commitment to helping others.

82-year-old Richard Carrillo is a veteran and former DJ who officials say spent time working at benefits for people battling cancers, something he himself has fought. They say 77-year-old Maggie Carrillo lives with rheumatoid arthritis but helps cook meals for people in need.

WireNut Home Services says the couple's AC has recently started to not cool the house properly, making it hard to use the kitchen for longer periods of time. The couple has tried to use fans and portable AC units, but those have sometimes caused other issues.

"My parents have a big heart. They are always donating food and their time to help others," Denise Carrillo wrote in her nomination, according to WireNut. "It would be so nice for them to have a cool home so my mom can continue to do what she loves by cooking meals not just for family but for others."

WireNut Home Services says the couple has continued to help their family through the struggles, including helping their son after recent health challenges.

The Lennox Feel the Love program helps homeowners across the country with new heating or cooling equipment, and WireNut Home Services helps out locally in southern Colorado, according to officials. The new system was installed in the Carrillo home a little over a week ago, on October 10.

"When we read the Carrillos’ story, what stood out was how much of their lives they’ve spent taking care of other people," Trent Urban of WireNut Home Services said in a press release. "Even while facing their own challenges, they continue to give their time, their home and what they have to help others. Feel the Love gives us an opportunity to turn that around and take care of them for a change. We’re honored to be able to give Richard and Margie the comfort they deserve in their own home."
